Council wanted to rehabilitate and improve the car park in Richmond Avenue near Dee Why Lagoon to augment the Surf Club parking area and improve parking facilities next to the reserve. It was proposed to replace the gravel car park with a sealed surface, Kerb and Gutter, new car barriers and drainage as necessary. The car park facilitates 90 deg parking with marked bays. An opportunity was been taken to add Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) to the project as agreed by Council. This approach provided a sustainable solution by polishing the stormwater entering the outlet on Dee Why Beach. The design also tended to reduce the overall project cost (as opposed to full stormwater drainage) and allow for the infiltration of clean stormwater back into the ground
and cleaner overflow onto the beach. The Pond and Riffle treatment added a pleasant landscape design feature while careful attention was paid to the planting to reduce maintenance and maximise stormwater polishing. NOTE: This project won a “Highly Commended” Award at the 2012 IPWEA Excellence Awards held at the Annual State Conference in Coffs Harbour in the Category of “Environmental Enhancement Project or
Imitative”.
