Neeson Murcutt Architects were invited to join COMPLETE’s team as architects in association. The aquatic centre is designed to be on a podium overlooking an extensive flood plain to the north. The “sanctuary” scheme is a site specific solution, creating an urban destination within the plain. A generous courtyard is provided at the centre of the complex containing the main pool, children’s play area and cafe. Overhead tensioned cables allow for movable shade cloth canopies to be provided over the interactive play area and a section of the main pool. A singular roof surrounds the pool deck and collects rainwater for reuse. Multiple modes of use are provided for families, special groups, individuals, young, elderly, able and those with a disability. As well as architecture, COMPLETE undertook civil engineering, flood analysis and landscape design for the project as well as providing full project management services during the concept, town planning, design development, detailed design and documentation phases.
